GREEN SCHOOLS

For the past two years, the Green Schools Committee have been busy working towards the Marine Flag. The Marine Flag focuses on the marine environment and the effects that pollution is having on our oceans. This week was a big week as we had a visit from Ms Niamh Moran from DLR to look at all the work the boys have been doing. The boys met Ms Moran in the library and had a number of presentations ready for her.

Brian Carroll and Andrew Keyes began by presenting an overview of everything we have done in Green Schools over that past two years. This includes plastic reduction competitions, clean up days and the creation of our Green Code “Don’t be mean, be more green to save the marine!”. Paddy Shanahan, Patrick Agnew and Joseph Norris then spoke about the sugar cane water bottles that their class brought into the school last year. Max Barry and Maurice Nelligan stood up to speak about their petition to ask McDonalds to stop using so much plastic in their Happy Meal (keep an eye out for them looking for signatures at the 5th Form Blitz!). Rian Hughes, Jeff Keogh, Gavin O’Brian and Marcas McGovern showed off their very impressive No Wire Dryer before Paul Hartnett and Ryan Hanley told us about their Bin Check App. Both super inventions were created as part of the Intel Mini Scientist Competition and our visitor was amazed by the ideas the boys had come up with. Finally, the boys answered some questions on their time in the Green Schools Committee. Ms Moran asked the boys what they like about being on the committee and some of the answers given
included

“It’s nice working together and talking to people you wouldn’t usually talk to because they’re in other classes”

“It makes you feel special”

“I look forward to it every Tuesday morning, everyone is really nice and you get to learn a lot about the environment”

The boys were even asking about what the next flag will be if we get this one, showing their commitment to the environment!
A huge congratulations to every boy who has made a contribution to any project we have worked on for the past two years. You have done Green Schools, Willow Park and yourselves extremely proud.
