WILLOW ARCHIVES PROJECT

“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”

(Martin Luther King Jr.)

Every country has its own traditions. The same is true of families, communities, and schools.

At more than 80 years old, Willow Park Junior School is a well-established school which has developed many traditions and passions over the decades.

The archive project from the Willow Park Parents Association (WPA) was the brainchild of its current chairman Eddie Barron. It was developed in an effort to explore the history of Willow Park and to help the current pupils and families.

Under the project, a number of photographic exhibitions have been developed around the key themes of sports and religion in the school. Each exhibition captures images from the past along with more recent times.

The sports exhibition shows children playing sports in the 1950s and 60s as well as in 2019. The sports are all familiar to today’s Willow pupils although haircuts and clothes have altered over the years. Sports Day is featured in the exhibition with fathers in more formal attire sprinting to the finishing line or chasing balloons.

Images in the exhibition on religion capture boys making their First Confession, Communion, and Confirmation from as far back as the 1940s to the present day. It also features just some of the key Spiritan priests who have shaped Willow and its pupils down through the years.

For some Willow Parkonians, looking at the images will be a trip down memory lane as many generations of their family will have been educated here. For other families, it will raise awareness of times past in the school.

The exhibitions are accompanied by a display of items from the archives in Blackrock College. It is hoped that this will be an ongoing project that will be developed over time.

While spearheaded by the WPA, the project has enjoyed the support of Willow Park’s Principal Mr. James Docherty as well as Blackrock College and its archivist Clare Foley who provided invaluable advice and guidance.
