My day in Dáil Éireann by Paddy Shanahan

On November 15th I went to Dáil Éireann for the very first Youth Assembly on Climate Change. We arrived at Buswells hotel to register and meet our chaperones by 8am and were split into 5 groups, Environment,(my group) Education, Farming, Power and Economics. We were escorted to Leinster House and went through the security check.
Leinster House is a massive old building with incredible engravings on every wall. The 157 delegates and the Ceann Comhairle had our photo taken outside Leinster House and then we walked through long corridors full of paintings and finally reached the door of the Dáil chamber.
It was like a big basin of politics mashed up into a stew! We sat in our designated seats and speakers stood to present from each group. After the first session ended we went to the committee rooms to debate the proposals and eventually voted through two from each group.
My Environment group voted to propose "Ecocide” (destruction of large area’s of natural environment) be made illegal in Ireland and that an “Afforestation” scheme be introduced to raise Ireland's forest cover from 11% to the European average of 40%.
Before lunch I went with the producer Evelyn O’Rourke to the broadcasting unit and was interviewed by Miriam O'Callaghan. I thought I would be nervous but I talked about reusable water bottles and it was great fun. We had lunch in the TD's restaurant. The food was tasty and I met really nice people.
We returned to the Dáil chamber and 10 proposals were put forward to the Ceann Comhairle. These became our Proclamation on Climate Change. Then we went back to Buswell's hotel where we met Minister for the Environment, Richard Bruton and gave him our proclamation.
A bus brought us to the RTE after party where I met Dee Frobes, the Director General of RTE whose brother went to Willow and Ryan Tubridy who also went to Willow Park. It was a brilliant experience and I will never forget my day at Dáil Éireann.
Thank you Ms Hannon for getting me to apply.
