On Friday, February 7th, the Junior Infant and 3rd class boys were introduced to the art of Chinese Kung Fu, by guest teacher Dell Wang. Mr. Wang has been teaching Wu Shu, Tai Ji, and Chinese Kung Fu to both kids and adults for over ten years and has competed himself in competitions in China on several occasions.

On Friday, the children started by learning basic Chinese introductions and how to start and end each Kung Fu session respectfully with the symbol of “Bao Quan Li”. This is where the right hand, formed in a fist, is pushed into the upright palm of the left hand.

The children learnt the importance of balance and co-ordination, exploring how to hold their hands and place their feet prior to and after every movement. They looked at the importance of defense techniques together with the skill of combat and how to control your arms and legs in movement. The children learned how to test and measure an opponent’s power using their own strength as both a tool and a benchmark.

All the boys in Junior Infants and 3rd class acted with great maturity and represented themselves and their school with great respect as they followed the instructions of Mr. Wang.
