Blackrock College and Willow Park Campus Development Evening

On May 2nd parents were invited to Blackrock College for an information evening about the Blackrock College and Willow Park Campus Development Programme.

Parents were welcomed to the Creative Arts and Digital Learning Centre in Blackrock College. They were informed of the vision for the Campus and the many recent developments from which the boys are benefiting on a daily basis on the Campus.

The presentation was given by Mr. Alan MacGinty (Principal Blackrock College), Mr. James Docherty (Principal WPJS) and Mr. Johnny O'Shea (Head of Campus Development) on delivering a world-class campus for the boys in Willow and Blackrock.

Parents were informed of the next phase of development which will endeavor to future-proof a dynamic learning environment for the boys.

Phase Five Development

Stage 1. Installation of all-weather playing & training pitch (completed)

Willow Park First Year extension (completion date: summer of 2019)

Stage 2. New internal roadway and recreation areas (2020/21)

Widening of Willow Drive (2020)

Redevelopment of Willow Upper block of playing pitches (2020-2022)

Stage 3. New changing pavilion (2021/22)

Upgrade to existing pavilion (2022)

Stage 4. Widening of gate and drive to Cross Avenue (2023)

Enhancement of campus landscape frame (2023)

€12 million is the level of investment required to complete these projects. To date €3 million has been raised.

The presentation was followed by a short tour of the Blackrock College buildings. Johnny O’Shea guided parents around the College. Parents were pleasantly surprised at the high standard and wide range of facilities that are on offer for the boys throughout their school day.

Parents visited the best in class Swimming pool, Sports Hall with dedicated and purpose-built changing rooms and gym, the Home Economics Lab with a very high standard of cooking facilities on offer to the boys as well as the various Science Labs with dedicated facilities to enable active learning. The Science Block was a real wow factor as space and light create a dynamic and modern learning environment. A lot of research was conducted into the benefits of natural light and space and the positive effects it has on learning and productivity.

The history of the College is evident but parents were amazed at the history behind the beautiful chapel in the College. This leads out onto the Senior Wing of the College which is a courtyard steeped in history while sympathetic additions have been made to the area with the Science Block. Boys can enjoy a stunning view of the Dublin coast a chance for them to calm their minds after a busy day of learning or sporting, arts, crafts or musical activities they have been engaged in during the day. Parents also viewed the Classrooms, Recreation areas and the Dining Hall.

Willow Park Junior School and Blackrock College Campus are offering a dynamic education that gives students space and modernised facilities to enable them to find their niche and perform to their best ability. There are 1,850 students on the Campus. Many of the boys will have started their journey on the Campus in the Junior School at the age of 5. A unique offering in Ireland is the self-contained First Year building creating a familiar environment for the boys to adjust to the transition from Primary School to Senior School.

As many of the boys will be starting in the College in September to start their dynamic learning experience in Blackrock College there are tours on each Thursday evening for the parents and boys to view first hand the best in class facilities that they will enjoy in their daily lives in the College.

Tours will be available on the following dates, 16th, 23rd, 30th May.
